Pixel is short for picture element, they are small dots which make a smooth and clear image on a screen. The screen is divided into thousands or even millions of pixels but you can't see any of the pixels because of how small they are. Each pixel can only be one colour at a time, but because they're so small they can often blend together to form various shades and blends of colours.
Resolution:
This is how many pixels a monotor can display. For example; A small montor may have resolution or 640 x 480 this would mean there is 640 pixels horizontally across the screen and 480 pixels vertically. The higher the resolution the more can be displayed on screen.
Screen Rate:
This is the number of frames of an animation which are displayed every seconds, it's measured in frames per second (fps). The higher the frame rate is the smoother the animation will be. (At less than 3- fps the human eye can see the new picture coming onto the screen.)
Video Formats:
The 3 main formats used are HD, NTSC and PAL. HD has the highest resolution. PAL is the UK standard defition image and NTSC is the US standard defintion image. We look at video formats with the term of pixels, (for example: High definition 1080; 1920 x 1080 or 2,073,600 pixels.)
Compression:
Compresion is used to reduce the size of one or more files, when a file has been compresed it takes up less space and can be transferred to other systems quicker than an uncompressed version. This is usually used to save disk space and reduce the time needed to transfer files over the internet.
